The Discovery Cycle Tour takes you on a journey of around 180 kilometres right through the heart of everything that makes this area special – ideal for a long weekend if you take your time. Three to four days, at a leisurely pace. No stress, just the ride.
The tour is perfect for anyone who’d rather enjoy the ride than struggle. Hardly any steep sections, just gentle hills and views that make you want to stop and take them in. On an e-bike, it’s a breeze – nature, culture and cuisine all come together effortlessly.
In the south, the choice is yours: would you rather admire the lakes or soak up the panoramic views? In the west, you cycle along the Inn and Salzach rivers – either ‘over there’ in Bavaria or ‘over here’ on our side. Whichever suits you best.
And because we like to know where the best spots are, we’ve included the perfect cycling map with loads of tips. Just order it and set off. You’ll discover the rest for yourself along the way anyway.
Tips for explorers
Special spots, lovely views and little surprises await you along the route. Just keep your eyes peeled, and you’ll almost stumble across them by chance: a herb garden, an old steam locomotive, a wind farm, a Kneipp facility or a castle hill. And that’s by no means all.
Getting here
The Discovery Cycle Tour is a circular route, so you can join it almost anywhere – on either side of the river. If you want to make your journey climate-friendly, you can join the cycle path directly from the platform at many stations. It’s easy to get here from nearby cities such as Linz, Munich, Salzburg or Vienna.
Key railway stations are:
- Neumarkt-Wallersee near Salzburg (right next to the signposted access road to the cycle route)
- Braunau am Inn (500 metres from the cycle path)
- Simbach am Inn (1 km from the cycle route)
- Lamprechtshausen (300 metres from the cycle route)
- Burghausen (right next to the cycle route)

The individual routes of the Discovery Cycle Tour with GPX tracks
On the Discovery Cycle Tour, the choice is yours – and that’s exactly what makes it so exciting.
In the south, you can either cycle along the Panorama Route with its beautiful views or take a leisurely ride along the Lakes Route. And when you reach the Inn and Salzach rivers, the choice is yours: would you rather cycle ‘herent’ on the Austrian side or ‘drent’ in Bavaria?

Important to note: the route is only signposted in a clockwise direction. If you cycle the other way round, a navigation app will be a great help.
A treat for the palate
From a cosy snack at the cider farmer’s to the pub where the aroma of roast meat wafts through the whole building – there’s plenty of good food on offer along the Discovery Cycle Tour. There are also regional inns, fine restaurants and even two breweries. At one of them, the brewery inn is right next door. Handy if you fancy popping in for a drink after your next round.
And then there’s our bread.
In the Quellenviertel, that’s more than just a side dish. “We are bread” is our motto – and you can tell. In bakeries, cafés and special culinary stops, it’s all about crisp crusts, honest craftsmanship and the aroma of freshly baked goods.
So: cycle, stop for a bite, taste and discover.

Yes, the route is signposted. Important: the signposting is only in a clockwise direction. If you’re cycling in the opposite direction, you should use a sat-nav app or the GPX data. Otherwise, exploring can quickly turn into a search. That can be nice too, but not always.
As it is a circular route, you can join it at many different points. Places with rail links or situated close to the cycle path are particularly convenient, for example Braunau am Inn, Simbach am Inn, Burghausen, Lamprechtshausen and Neumarkt am Wallersee.

Neumarkt am Wallersee is situated directly on a signposted access road to the cycle route. Braunau am Inn is about 500 metres from the cycle path, Simbach am Inn about 1 kilometre, and Lamprechtshausen around 300 metres. Burghausen is situated directly on the cycle path.
