In 2003, a group of former and current employees of Telekom Austria AG (formerly the Postal and Telegraph Administration) came together in Upper Austria to document the development of telecommunications in Austria. Some of these employees had already been involved in 1985–1986 in preparing the special exhibition “100 Years of Telephony in Upper Austria” at the Upper Austrian State Museum (Francisco Carolinum) in Linz. To preserve telecommunications equipment and record historical events, the association “Telecommunications Technology Then and Now” was founded.
A telecommunications museum with an extensive collection of telecommunications equipment was established in the telecommunications building. The museum features a broad cross-section of equipment that was in operation in Austria after 1945 within the telecommunications networks of the Austrian Postal and Telegraph Administration.
The association’s website provides a brief overview of the collection. In addition to the museum, an extensive archive on the history of telecommunications in Austria was created. The archive is divided into several chronological and thematic sections and can also be viewed via the “History” link on the website.
