2er Schützen-Museum des k.u.k. LIR Linz No. 2

The “Traditionsraum der 2-er Schützen” in the command building of PzGrenB 13 in Ried im Innkreis is a small but excellent museum dedicated to collecting and preserving memorabilia related to the deployment of LIR 2 (Landwehr Infantry Regiment 2, Linz “Zweier”) on the Isonzo Front.

In addition to uniforms of the Austro-Hungarian Army, the collection features an impressive number of headgear, as well as uniforms and personal equipment items from the Imperial Army. In addition, a series of infantry rifles dating back to 1873 provides an overview of rifled muzzle-loaders, early breech-loaders, and repeating rifles of Austrian, Russian, and Italian design, along with their accompanying bayonets.

The star of the collection is a Schwarzlose machine gun from World War I, which is on display for visitors. The Museum at No. 2 even owns a collection of hand grenades and rifle grenades, including Austrian, Italian, and French examples. The exhibition is rounded out by memorabilia from the comrades’ association, medals, and “Highest Decrees” concerning the LIR 2, as well as correspondence from the war and postwar periods. Particularly noteworthy is the display case showcasing items from the daily life of soldiers, which were collected and excavated in the former frontline area by members of the Linz 2nd and officers of the 13th Panzer-Grenadier Battalion.
