The "white gold " - salt - was a precious commodity for centuries. It was not only used as a seasoning, but above all as the most important preservative for meat, fish and other foods. Extracted in the Hallein salt works, the salt made its journey downstream on long, narrow wooden boats known as " Plätten".
The Plätten were steered by experienced boatmen and carried the valuable cargo down the Salzach to Burghausen and on to the Inn. Villages, jobs and an entire cultural landscape developed along this trade route.
Today, the Plätten landing stage invites you to pause and imagine how the creaking of the boats, the shouts of the workers and the glistening of the salt once dominated the scenery here.
