Historische Altstadt

Tittmoning, Bayern, Deutschland

Architecturally, Tittmoning is characterized by the Inn-Salzach style that is typical for the region - the town square with its colorful, monumental-looking rows of houses is a real gem. The romantic old town streets, baroque churches, impressive fountains and sculptures, the wonderfully renovated old town gates and the quiet corners of the town wall, which is almost completely preserved, still characterize Tittmoning's medieval charm today.

The wonderful image that Tittmoning's town square offers today is the result of the three-stage renovation of the old town that began in 1985. It began with the town square and the sewage disposal. In the second step, the western side streets and roads were renovated. The renovation of the eastern side streets and the connection to the water suburb formed the last renovation phase. Finally, in 1990/1991, the pearl of the town square, the historic town hall, was completely renovated. Thanks to the exemplary renovation by private investors, almost all of the facades shine in a fresh new splendor.
The town square, which is 298 m long, has a trapezoidal floor plan and is 60.3 m wide in the north and 26.4 m wide in the south.

Its shape and size have not changed since the town was founded in 1234 and is now one of the most beautiful town squares in Bavaria.
The two Gothic-style town gates border the square to the north and south. The city wall is almost completely preserved in its 14th-15th century design.

The sculptures on the town square are particularly worth a closer look: The Floriani fountain was always the city's main fountain. The fountain with the cloverleaf-shaped border was originally the city's horse pond, which was converted into a water reserve for fire-fighting purposes in 1889. The Marian column was created in 1758 by the local sculptor Johann Georg Itzlfeldner. The statue of John Nepomuk stands directly on the open town stream. The water patron found a suitable home in 1850 on the site of the demolished town watchtower. The war memorial of the Tittmoning district court (dissolved in 1931) was erected in 1881.
The stork fountain is a masterpiece. It was created around 1625 and represents an ancient symbol: the stork's fight with the snake is compared to the human struggle of conscience between reason and passion.
But not only the monuments on Tittmoning town square are worth a visit, but also the numerous other monuments in the municipal area are worthwhile destinations for walks or bike tours in our region.
