Een reis naar het onverwachte. Het startpunt van onze rondreis door Oberösterreich is de stad van de drie rivieren [Passau](https://www.passau.de/ "Passau") op de Beiers-Oostenrijkse grens, die gemakkelijk te bereiken is vanaf de Duitse A3. Verrassingen zijn aan de orde van de dag in Oberösterreich. Dit wordt al duidelijk een paar kilometer na de grens bij PassauHet landschap van de Boven-Donauvallei met zijn beboste rivieroevers is prachtig. Maar dat 's werelds eerste Zero Energy Museum hier in de gemeente Engelhartszell ligt? Linz: het kloppend hart van Opper-Oostenrijk -------------------------------------------- Tussen het oude granieten plateau van het Mühlviertel in het noorden en de bergkam van het Kürnberger Wald in het zuiden baant de Donau zich een weg naar [Linz](http://www.oberoesterreich.at/regionen/destinationen/linz.html) in vrij. Linz is een bruisende stad van contrasten die in alle opzichten verrast. Aan de ene kant zijn er de historische straten van de oude stad, het onverwacht ruime en brede hoofdplein en aan de andere kant de vele bezienswaardigheden van de moderne cultuur en architectuur. Bijvoorbeeld het [Lentos Kunstmuseum](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/401733/lentos-kunstmuseum.html "Lentos Kustmuseum") direct aan de Donau, een indrukwekkend thuis voor hedendaagse kunst. En direct aan de overkant ligt het [Ars Electronica Center](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/400727/ars-electronica-center.html "Ars Electronica Center"), waarschijnlijk een van de meest ongewone musea ter wereld. Het kijkt namelijk niet naar het verleden, maar naar de toekomst en stelt de vraag hoe nieuwe technologieën onze samenleving veranderen. Het Mühlviertel en de brouwersstad ---------------------------------- Op dit punt is het de moeite waard om een omweg naar het noorden te maken. De [Mühlviertel](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/regionen/destinationen/muehlviertel.html), een granieten hoogvlakte die in miljoenen jaren is gepolijst. Een verborgen juweel van gotische beeldhouwkunst is het [Kefermarkt-vleugelaltaar](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/400422/fluegelaltar-kefermarkt.html "Flügelaltar von Kefermarkt"), waarvan de figuren zich ongelooflijk levensecht en levendig naar de kijker toedraaien. De stad staat niet alleen bekend om zijn typische Mühlviertel-bieren. De rechtsvorm van de plaatselijke brouwerij is ook uniek. De aandelen van de "[Braucommune](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430010980/braucommune-in-freistadt-freistaedter-brauhaus.html "Braucommune")", berekend in "emmers", sinds mensenheugenis gekoppeld zijn aan het bezit van huizen in de oude stad Freistadt. Steyr en het nationaal park Kalkalpen ------------------------------------- Tijd om weer zuidwaarts te gaan, over de Donau en langs [Enns](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-stadt-ort/detail/430001046/enns.html "Enns"), de oudste stad van Oostenrijk met zijn opvallende stadstoren, naar [Steyr](http://www.oberoesterreich.at/steyr). Deze stad ligt aan de rivieren Enns en Steyr, die samenkomen tegen de achtergrond van een van de mooiste oude steden van Oostenrijk. In de oudheid gebruikten schippers de rivieren om ijzer uit de Stiermarkse Erzberg te halen. En daarmee welvaart en rijkdom. De herenhuizen in de stad weerspiegelen alle bouwstijlen, van gotiek tot barok en rococo. En in de wijk Wehrgraben vind je historische monumenten over de industriële geschiedenis van de stad. Maar bovenal is Steyr de toegangspoort tot het [Nationaal Park Kalkalpen](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/nationalpark-kalkalpen.html). Het grootste nationale park van Oostenrijk is een toevluchtsoord voor zeldzame planten en dieren. Hier sluipt de lynx door bergbossen met eeuwenoude beukenbomen, die op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staan. Wie verder naar het zuiden reist door het wilde en romantische Ennsdal, naar steeds machtiger bergen, moet een sportieve omweg maken naar de [Hintergebirgsradweg](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-tour/detail/430008030/r9-hintergebirgsradweg.html "Hintergebirgsradweg") route. De brede route, die herhaaldelijk door in de rotsen uitgehouwen tunnels voert, doet denken aan de tijd dat hier hout werd gekapt en via een bosspoorweg uit de kop van het dal werd vervoerd. Een prachtige route door het berglandschap aan de rand van de nationale parken is de rit over de Hengstpas naar de [vakantieregio Pyhrn-Priel](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/regionen/pyhrn-priel.html). Hier rijzen de noordelijke Kalkalpen op tot hoogten van meer dan 2.000 meter. Op de Wurbauerkogel in Windischgarsten staat de [Nationalpark Panoramaturm](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430001638/nationalpark-panoramaturm-wurbauerkogel.html "Nationalpark Panoramaturm"), een glazen uitkijkplatform voor iedereen die graag in de verte tuurt en de toppen aan de horizon telt. Naast alle rust is de Wurbauerkogel echter een echte avonturenberg, met uitdagende [bikepark](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430028212/bikepark-wurbauerkogel.html "Bikepark") en het snelle "[Alpine Coaster](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430001613/alpine-coaster-wurbauerkogel.html "Alpine Coaster")". Ook een omweg waard hier, naar het Stodertal. De [Schiederweiher](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430004301/schiederweiher-hinterstoder.html "Schiederweiher") in Hinterstoder werd een paar jaar geleden door de Oostenrijkers uitgeroepen tot mooiste plek van het land. Wanneer de grillige pieken van het Totes Gebirge worden weerspiegeld in het water, ontstaat een van de mooiste fotomotieven in de Alpen. De bergen, de meren, het zout ----------------------------- Cultuur en traditie worden gekweekt in de kloosters van Oberösterreich. Maar achter de kloostermuren weten de mensen ook hoe ze zich moeten vermaken. Als je tijdens je reis door het Kremsdal de torens van de abdij Schlierbach ziet, kun je overwegen om een culinaire pauze in te lassen, de [Zisterzienserstift](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/400653/zisterzienser-stift-schlierbach.html "Stift Schlierbach") maar een [kaasmakerij en genotcentrum](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/400082/stift-schlierbach-schaukaeserei-glasmalerei-panorama-cafe.html "Käserei Stift Schlierbach") om te proeven. Het Almtal is de eerste voorbode van het berg- en merengebied, bosrijk en ontspannend. Waar de Almsee rustig aan de kop van het dal ligt, weet men van de gezonde effecten van het bos. "[Waldness](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/service/reise-ideen/artikel/detail/1898/waldness-im-almtal.html)" is de naam die gegeven wordt aan de ontspannende en heilzame uitstapjes tussen de bomen, begeleid door professionele coaches. Tot slot ligt de Traunsee, het diepste meer van Oostenrijk, op slechts een steenworp afstand. Gmunden aan de noordelijke oever is de thuisbasis van "[Gmundner Keramik](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/magazin/oberoesterreich-auf-dem-tisch.html)", fijn servies uit Opper-Oostenrijk. In het Salzkammergut, waar de [zomerfrisheid](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/regionen/destinationen/salzkammergut/sommerfrische-im-salzkammergut.html) is uitgevonden, beknibbelt de natuur niet op superlatieven. Als je verder reist naar de [Attersee](http://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-destination/detail/152/ferienregion-attersee-salzkammergut.html) zie je het grootste binnenmeer van heel Oostenrijk. De beste achtergrond om te genieten van vers gevangen vis. En een inspiratiebron waar Gustav Klimt en Gustav Mahler tijdens hun zomervakantie tot de absolute hoogten van hun kunst reikten. Grote namen die je niet mag missen op je weg door het Salzkammergut. Een weg die populair is bij Salzkammergut-kenners slingert door het Weißenbachtal langs de gelijknamige beek van de Attersee naar het Traun-dal en naar [Bad Ischl](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-destination/detail/39/bad-ischl.html). De stad, die in 2024 samen met de omliggende regio Salzkammergut de [Europese Culturele Hoofdstad](https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/ "salzkammergut-2024.at") zal zijn, is veel meer dan alleen het voormalige zomerverblijf van de keizer. Ja, [Kaiservilla](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430002121/kaiservilla.html "Kaiservilla") en de hekgalerij van de voormalige [k.u.k. Hofzuckerbäckerei Zauner](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-gastronomie/detail/103885/konditorei-zauner.html "Konditorei Zauner") zijn natuurlijk een must. Dan is er nog de Katrin, de lokale berg van Bad Ischl met een kabelbaan en een adembenemend uitzicht op de majestueuze [Dachstein](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430026587/europaschutzgebiet-dachstein.html "Dachstein"). En als je een wandeling wilt maken naar de [Rettenbachalm](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-gastronomie/detail/430001012/gasthaus-rettenbachalm.html "Rettenbachalm") zul je de daar geserveerde lekkernijen nooit vergeten. Apropos Dachstein. De hoogste berg van Opper-Oostenrijk ligt in het zuidelijkste puntje van de provincie. De kabelbaan brengt je naar de "[5fingers](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/201659/aussichtsplattform-5fingers.html "5fingers")", een spectaculair uitkijkplatform met honderden meters uitzicht naar het Hallstattmeer met [Hallstatt](http://www.oberoesterreich.at/hallstatt), het UNESCO werelderfgoed dat zijn naam gaf aan een heel tijdperk in de menselijke geschiedenis. De [Salzwelten Hallstatt](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/401006/salzwelten-hallstatt.html "Salzwelten Hallstatt") geven een kijkje in de oudste zoutmijn ter wereld. De Dachstein zelf wordt doorkruist door vertakte grottenstelsels, die een voor een worden verkend. De wandeling door de [Rieseneishöhle](https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/400756/dachstein-rieseneishoehle.html "Rieseneishöhle") met zijn oogverblindende vorstsculpturen die door de natuur zijn gevormd. Meer namen van grote meren begeleiden de route door het Salzkammergut. De [Mondsee](http://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-destination/detail/10/mondsee-irrsee.html?h=15) is de ideale plek voor iedereen die wil genieten van een ontspannen duik of wil watersporten. Het is het warmste zwemmeer in de regio. De perfecte plek om je rondreis door Opper-Oostenrijk af te sluiten en nog even te blijven hangen. Omdat het moment zo mooi is. Please observe that there is an increased risk which can be avoided by means of appropriate attention and proper estimation and implementation of one’s own abilities. For this reason, please travel a route that is unfamiliar to you slowly and with special care. Pay constant attention to potential dangers and always observe traffic. Do not leave the routes featured in descriptions. The potential use of private roads, in particular forestry roads and agricultural transport roads, can be subject to legal restrictions, which must be observed and adhered to. The normal traffic rules apply. Each user (e.g. biker, motorbiker) is responsible for adhering to these rules and maintaining his/her bike/vehicle and its equipment (lights, brakes etc.) in good working order. Each user is also responsible for ensuring that he/she rides at a velocity that is appropriate for the conditions and his/her skill level and for maintaining sufficient distance to the rider in front. We explicitly recommend adjusting velocity to correspond to the respective field of vision, wearing a helmet, using reflective clothing (or similar) and employing bicycle lights in line with regulations. 3.Each tour requires good physical fitness as well as detailed planning. We explicitly recommend only taking the tours in the case of optimal healthiness. We recommend that you conclude an accident and liability insurance policy. Use an onboard computer that displays the respective kilometres travelled per day and is calibrated for the front wheel. 4.Special for mountain bikers – Fair-play rules: Mountain biking is one of the most wonderful outdoor leisure-time activities. Whilst biking or on a mountain biking tour, mountains and lakes, meadows and cabins are re-discovered in new ways. A couple of rules for fair play in the forest help to avoid conflicts whilst mountain biking. a.Pedestrians have the right of way: We are accommodating and friendly to pedestrians and hikers. Upon encountering these fellow travellers, we alert them by using the bicycle bell and slowly overtake them. We avoid paths with heavy pedestrian traffic altogether. Take nature into account: We do not leave refuse behind. b.The braking distance should be half of the total distance visible: We ride at a controlled pace, are ready to brake and maintain a braking distance half as long as the total distance visible, especially in curves, because we always have to count on obstacles on the path. Damage to the path, stones, branches, wood piles, grazing livestock, cattle grids, barriers, tractor-type forestry machines and authorised vehicles pose dangers that we need to be ready for. c.Don’t drink and drive!: Do not drink alcohol when mountain biking. Take care at stop-off points (dealing with bike racks, dirty shoes or clothing). It is obligatory to provide first aid! d.Marked routes, closed paths and blockades: Keep to the marked routes, observe the blockades and accept that these roads are primarily for agricultural and forestry use! Blockades can often not be avoided and are in your own interest. Biking beyond the intended path and outside of opening times is punishable and turns us into illegal bikers. e.We are guests in the forest and behave accordingly, including vis-à-vis forestry and hunting staff. Whilst mountain biking, mobile telephones and music players are forbidden! Biking requires your full attention. f.Avoid unnecessary noise. Out of consideration to the animals living in the wild, we only bike during full daylight. As a principle, we always wear our helmet (even when riding uphill)! Don’t forget emergency supplies: We always have a repair set and bandages along. g.Don’t overestimate your skills: We should not overdo it when it comes to biking technique and physical fitness. Take the level of difficulty posed by the route into consideration and make a precise estimate of your experience and skills as a biker (braking, bell, lights)! h.Close gates: We approach grazing livestock at a walking pace and close every gate behind us. We should avoid causing escape and panic reactions in the animals. Nothing stands in the way of the fun and athletic challenge in the mountains and forests! i.Traffic rules: The general traffic rules (StVO) apply for all the mountain biking routes and we adhere to them. Our bike therefore needs to be in perfect technical condition and equipped in line with the traffic rules, including brakes, a bell and lights.
