Around 30 kilometres north of the city of Salzburg, near the village of St. Pantaleon in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria, the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg has created a place that stands for sustainable agriculture, diversity and, above all, experimentation and surprises. The brewery is deliberately going back to the roots and taking all the steps involved in brewing beer back into its own hands. "Variety instead of standardised beer" is the motto of the private brewery. Old animal breeds threatened with extinction are kept on an organic farm and forgotten ancient grain varieties are cultivated, which Stiegl is the only brewery in Austria to malt itself. These rare brewing malts are processed in the country's first all-wood brewery. A show garden, themed trails and a "beery Kråmerladen", where home-brewed Wildshut beers and farmhouse specialities are served, round off the offer.
