The Ranna is the border river between the municipalities of Neustift i.M. and the neighboring municipality of Hofkirchen. The Ranna Reservoir, with its 45-meter-high dam, was constructed in 1950 for electricity generation and is a popular destination, especially for hikers and anglers. In the spring, during the snowmelt, the overflowing Ranna Reservoir creates a spectacular natural spectacle. The masses of water plunge over the dam, and the Ranna River—which otherwise flows leisurely downstream—is transformed into a raging torrent within just a few minutes. During fishing season, a dream comes true for many when they can go fishing at Lake Rannabad and the Ranna Reservoir.
