Gundacker III, builder of the Starhemberg fortress, had the market town of Haag established around the middle of the 13th century. This belonged with the surrounding villages first to the old large parish Hofkirchen/Tr. and later to the parish Rottenbach.

From here the Ägidiuskirche in Niedernhaag (today cemetery church) as well as the Vituskapelle near the market were pastorally cared for. In 1636, at the instigation of the citizens, the vicariate of Haag was established with its own priest, who carried out his duties as deputy to the parish priest of Rottenbach.

Haag became an independent parish only in 1883. Today our parish counts 2291 Catholics. The parish church of St. Vitus was built between 1694 and 1697 on the site of the former Vitus Chapel. Besides the new organ from 1993, it contains several works of art from the famous Schwanthaler workshop in Ried. During the last renovation of the church in 1988/89, the interior of the church was also redesigned, which is particularly conducive to the contemporary celebration of the liturgy.

A detailed description of the parish history and the parish church can be found in the church guide, which is available in the parish church and can be purchased for 2 euros.
