According to legend, St. Severin († 482) preached here. The first documentary evidence dates back to 1423. The church was built in Gothic style, probably between 1398 and 1423. It likely goes back to a foundation of the Lords of Pollheim, who acquired the castle and lordship of Tegernbach in 1398 and whose ancestral castle was located near the present-day village of Pollham. The Magdalenaberg Church belonged to the parish of Schönau and was thus subject to the Benedictine Monastery of Mondsee. In the 16th century, during the Reformation, Protestant preachers worked here. In the years 1614 to 1621, the nave was structurally altered by parish priest Andreas Wolff and the organ loft was built. By order of Joseph II, the Magdalenaberg Church had to be sold in 1786. A farmer bought the church, returned it to the parish of Schönau and saved it from decay. In the 70s of the last century, in the course of an extensive restoration, an interesting discovery was made: women's braids were found in the wall niches of the apse - possible signs of penance.
