The building that now houses Braunau’s main cultural centre was originally built as a factory for fire extinguishers in 1881. Its external facade was declared “worth conserving” by the Federal Office of Monuments. In 1989 a theatrical group first rented the building. With the help of the town of Braunau and the government of Upper Austria, the building was converted into a small theatre and a café. After its renovation and expansion the GUGG was reopened as cultural hotspot in the heart of Braunau in September 2005.
